Sage Narada provoked another story behind Omkareshwar Temple Ujjain involving Vindhya Mountain. In a serious discussion with Narada, Vindhya wanted to prove him wrong and started to observe the strict penance to please Lord Shiva.

The Omkareshwar linga which was located on the bank of the Narmada River, Vindhya did penance for up to six months. Lord Shiva appeared pleased by his devotion and asked to make a wish.

At the request of Lord Shiva, Vindhya Mountain asked to give him wisdom. The prayer established and placed itself for eternity simultaneously. Lord Shiva made the two parts of Shivling at the request of all sages and God. The shivlinga has two parts named Omkar and Amaleshwar.

In the Narmada region, people consider Omkareshwar Temple in Ujjain as the best pilgrimage site. People believed that unless they offered the water brought by pilgrims to Omkareshwar Shivling, the darshan of Shiva linga was not complete. Of all the pilgrimage sites, Omkareshwar Temple Ujjain is the end.

Significance Of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga

The Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga temple is divided into two parts. The first one is Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, and the other part is known as the Mamleshwar temple. The devotees need to visit both temples if they are going to visit the temple to get complete darshan. Lord Shiva is self-born here, hence Jyotirlingas is Swayambhu.

The Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga has a little hole in the centre. The anointing water flows through the opening and merges with the Narmada River as soon as we anoint the Shivalinga.

Omkareshwar Temple Ujjain

Because of this, Hindus consider the Narmada River to be their most sacred river. The Narmada flows westward and joins the Arabian Sea, while the majority of the rivers in India flow eastward and join the Bay of Bengal.

Amaleswara Linga is located opposite Omkareswar Lingam. It is really special to have the Sahasra Shivling Puja here. Devotees can perform this pooja immediately, and consequently, they believe they fully own the outcome of the puja.
