Lord Vishnu took the appearance of Jalandhar at the deities’ command and, by means of treachery, destroyed the agricultural religion of Vrinda. Vrinda’s virtuous dharma was destroyed and he was killed in battle, causing Jalandhara’s authority to begin declining immediately.

Vrinda cursed Lord Vishnu to turn into a stone after learning that he had deceitfully corrupted her husband’s beliefs. All of the gods were furious when Lord Vishnu became a stone. They pleaded with Vrinda to lift the curse. With mercy, Vrinda revoked her curse. To perpetuate Vrinda’s curse, Lord Vishnu took the form of a stone that became known as Shaligram because he was embarrassed by his deeds.
