Most Common Puja Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Puja Mistakes: Worshipping or doing Puja is the ultimate way of getting the blessings of God. By worshipping God with full devotion, you can get peace and positivity in your life.

It is believed that worship done in a proper manner and without any mistake maintains peace and happiness in the house, and one also receives God’s special blessings.

Puja Mistakes

According to religious beliefs, worship is an eternal way to get closer to God and receive his blessings.

Before, during, and after worship, some rules should be followed with devotion and regularly; otherwise, the worship does not yield results.

Everyone wants to conduct a perfect religious ceremony, but even a small mistake can ruin the whole puja.

This small Puja mistake made during worship does not allow one to receive God’s blessings. Here, in this blog, we are telling you the most common puja mistakes made during the puja.

With 99Pandit, you will get to know what things should be taken special care of during worship so that your worship can be successful.

What is Puja?

Puja is the Hindi meaning of the word for worship. It is a sacred ritual in Hinduism to call upon and honour deities.

While doing puja, we offer many things to the deities, such as fruits, water, chanting mantras, and symbolic actions.

Puja is a devotional worship whereby devotees hope to connect with the Divine. This connection allows the devotees to better themselves spiritually while also seeking a blessing.

The practice of puja includes many elements, from lighting lamps to chanting mantras. All elements are performed with a sense of devotion and precision.

Each action in the process represents an integral part of devotion and the surrender to higher powers.

What are the Most Common Puja Mistakes?

Every day, puja or worship is considered a sacred ceremony in many Indian residences.

It is more than a spiritual activity, but a process of manifesting peace, prosperity, and divine blessings into our lives.

However, there are some common daily puja mistakes where individuals unknowingly invite bad energy instead of good energy into their lives.

According to Vastu Shastra and Hindu scriptures, puja must be performed with the correct process and mindset.

There can be several minor mistakes in daily worship; even one of these can obstruct the positive energies flowing into your life, which may cause a gap for obstacles to arise.

In this blog, let us examine the most common mistakes a devotee makes in their daily worship activities and how you can avoid these mistakes.

Mistake 1: Choosing the Wrong Muhurat (Time)

One of the most underrated parts of a prosperous puja is the timing. If you are doing the rituals at the wrong time. It lowers the importance of the puja and may even invoke negative energy.

Puja Mistakes

Most people do not focus on the tithi (day of the moon), nakshatra (star constellations), or even what day of the week happens to be on that particular day.

How to avoid:

Always reference a Hindu Panchang or speak to a knowledgeable Pandit to know what the best muhurat is for the puja you are doing.

Many have online access to 99Pandit, where you can find a muhurat and book a Pandit.

Mistake 2: Incorrect or Incomplete Samagri

Each puja is different in samagri (items), for example, kalash, kumkum, flowers, diya, ghee, etc.

Puja Mistakes

Using conjunctive or inappropriate samagri, such as expired items, artificial items, or improper use, may lessen or lower the sanctity of the puja . Not to mention people forget to use even the complete samagri: janeu, betel nuts.

How to avoid:

Use verified and complete Puja Kits from legitimate sources like shop.99pandit.com. Because 99Pandit offers verified samagri kits that are based on the pujas, you can always find the proper samagri!

You can even order and get the kits like the Ganesh Puja Samagri kit and the Diwali Puja Samagri kit within 6-7 working days.

Mistake 3: Not Maintaining Cleanliness and Purity

Puja requires both physical and spiritual cleanliness. Some people accidentally participate in rituals while not clean, sometimes wearing regular clothes, or without taking a bath, or completing the puja ritual in a dirty or unclean atmosphere.

Puja Mistakes

To make matters worse, some people offer leftovers from meals to the Deity or have even touched their cell phones, or sacred offerings and objects, without even washing their hands.

How to avoid:

You should always bathe before doing a puja and wear clean and traditionally appropriate clothing. And please always clean the puja area thoroughly, and avoid using expired or unsanitary items in your puja.

Mistake 4: Mispronouncing the Mantras

The importance of a mantra is the spiritual vibration, and several factors combine for a mantra to have its intended effectiveness.

This also includes correct pronunciation and intonation. People sometimes mispronounce mantras in Sanskrit, specifically due to rushing the puja rituals.

Puja Mistakes

People do not practice them correctly, or do not have a chance to practice them before the Puja at all. When this happens or is simply incorrect, a steady flow of spiritual energy is disrupted.

How to avoid:

To avoid this situation, one can use audio/video guides or mantra books with the original mantras in Sanskrit. You can even do this with the same mantras written in your regional language.

You can also sign up for an online E-puja where the Pandit will recite the mantras, and you can follow along and learn.

Mistake 5: Being unfocused or absent-minded during puja

Many people tend to treat their puja as a chore instead of as an offering to God. Usage of phones, multitasking, and even talking can potentially ruin the spiritual energy within your puja ritual.

Puja Mistakes

How to avoid:

Try to choose a quiet time period to do the best adjectives to create the right environment to perform your puja.

Keep your phone on silent and just stay mentally in your puja ritual. Take a long, deep breath, and try to set an intention (Sankalp) before your puja.

Mistake 6: Inadequate Knowledge of the Ritual Process

A puja ceremony consists of several distinct yet connected rituals. For example, invoking the deities, offering a naivedyam, aarti, and followed by the visarjan.

Puja Mistakes

When individuals rely on memory or guesswork, they often miss steps or even do so by the rule of thumb, in the wrong order.

How to avoid:

Using a step-by-step puja guide. If in doubt, either use an online guided puja or simply plan to have a Pandit perform the puja. Websites like 99Pandit can help you with arranging a professional service.

Mistake 7: Disrespectful or Improper Handling of Deities, Idols, and Images

Inappropriate actions could include just placing the idol anywhere, using a broken idol, or extending their hands to a deity with soiled hands. These acts are really considered inauspicious.

Puja Mistakes

How to avoid:

Place idols facing the right way (e.g., Lord Ganesha facing east or west). Do not use broken idols or photos. The devotee should have respect and devotion while handling the murti or images.

Mistake 8: Performing Puja in an Unclean or Inappropriate Space

Performing puja in an area or location near footwear, in a cluttered corner, or in other noisy areas can take away the sanctity of the ritual.

Puja Mistakes

A puja should be performed in a location that is clean and peaceful for the process. The spiritual vibrations need a clean environment.

How to avoid:

You will need to create a designated, clean, and calm puja space in your home. Avoid keeping electronics, footwear, and used things in the puja location. Always light incense or camphor to disperse the environment.

Mistake 9: Ignoring Sankalp (Statement of Purpose)

Countless individuals skip the Sankalp, which is the formal intent stated upfront at the beginning of the puja that aligns your mind and devotion with the purpose of the puja.

Puja Mistakes

How to avoid:

Always perform Sankalp before beginning any puja. If you aren’t sure how to say the Sankalp, ask a Pandit or follow a script.

You can easily book a Pandit from 99Pandit and ask for every minute detail. Get your puja done without any mistakes from 99Pandit.

Mistake 10: Not Conducting Aarti Properly

Aarti should be done with control, in circular motion, and done with bhakti (devotion). If you rush through the aarti process or do not perform the aarti properly, the emotional and spiritual impact decreases.

Puja Mistakes

How to avoid:

Use a proper aarti thali that contains a diya, camphor, and bell. Sing the aarti or use a recording. Move in a clockwise circular motion in front of the deity with the thali.

Mistake 11: Throwing Away Puja Waste The Wrong Way

Throwing away your old flowers, diya, or used prasad in the rubbish bin or pouring it down the drain is tremendously disrespectful in Hindu culture and tradition.

Puja Mistakes

How to avoid:

Offer used samagri to plants, immerse in flowing water, or place in biodegradable containers for disposal.

Mistake 12: Incomplete Naivedyam (offering)

An incomplete offering is also a common error. For instance, during puja, offering some foods that you would generally eat yourself, which include onion/garlic, or packaged processed snacks instead of homemade, simple, satvik (without onion, garlic, and preservatives) food. It may sound ridiculous, but these errors are widespread.

Puja Mistakes

How to avoid:

Prepare homemade satvik food to offer to the deities. Offering to a deity with sincerity and genuine effort is essential, so later, if you want to share the remainder of the food, that’s fine.

The Story Of Nag Panchami

On Nag Panchami, there are many stories based on it. One of the stories, if we talk about it, follows:

Once there was a farmer who lived in a state who had one daughter and two sons. One day, while running the plow, the snake’s children were crushed and died.

Nag Panchami 2025

In the search for revenge for the murder of a child, the snake kept mourning at first and went to kill the farmer.

The snake that night bites the farmer, his wife, and both boys, but when he arrives, to bites the daughter of a farmer.

She placed a bowl of milk and started apologizing by folding her hands in front of the serpent.

This made the Serpent delighted by the farmer’s daughter and raised her parents and brothers alive. The day was the shukla paksha of the Shravan month.

Since then, every year on this day, Serpent is worshipped and the day is dedicated to ignoring the wrath of the serpent. Hence, the tradition of Nag Panchami started.

Legend Associated With Nag Panchami

As seen by the numerous references to snakes in Indian scriptures like the Agni Purana and Narada Purana, etc., snakes retain a special place in Hindu culture.

There are various myths surrounding Nag Panchami, and one of them is told in the Mahabharata.

In this myth, Lord Kashyapa, the son of Lord Brahma, marries Kadru and Vinata, the daughters of King Prajapati.

Kadru is thought to have given birth to the Naga race, in whose memory the celebration of Nag Panchami subsequently developed.

In contrast, Vinata gave birth to Aruna and Garuda, who later served as the Sun God’s charioteer. A different myth dates back to the reign of Lord Krishna.

The myth claims that when Lord Krishna was a young child, the enormous serpent Kaliya attacked him. Then, Krishna leapt onto Kaliya’s several heads and started dancing.

Kaliya quickly started vomiting blood as a result, and she also started to go unconscious.

When his wives saw this, they came and begged Lord Krishna not to kill him. Finally, he expressed his regret to Lord Krishna and vowed to stop disturbing people.

Significance Of Nag Panchami

On this day, they worship the Nagalok Lord. Several nations around the world, including our neighbouring Nepal, commemorate it in addition to India.

When we hear the name of the snake, we immediately feel afraid. Additionally, the Snake is seen as a direct form of Kaal.

On Nag Panchami, however, worshipping the snake dispels all anxieties. People who worship the snake god offer milk to him on the day of Nag Panchami.

At the same time, a snake image is often produced or placed at the front of the house in several locations.

Nag Panchami 2025

Besides, women adore Nag as their brother on Nag Panchami. The Nag Panchami narrative contains the explanation. It is also beneficial to worship Lord Shiva on this day.

Many believe that worshipping Mahadev in the month of Sawan holds greater significance.

Furthermore, many believe that you should fast on Panchami for a year, or twelve months if someone in your home has died due to a snake bite. As a result, there won’t ever be a need for snake fear.

Throughout our nation, devotees can find Nag Devta temples, notably in Maharashtra and Karnataka, where they can pay special homage to the god Naga Panchami.

During this celebration, devotees also protect serpents. This motivates us to protect snakes from rogue traders who either illegally trade them to foreign areas or murder them for a variety of reasons.

Puja Vidhi for Nag Panchami

Typically, people observe Nag Panchami during the Shukla Paksha of the Shravan month.

Additionally, people in various regions also celebrate it during the Chaitra Shukla Panchami or Bhadrapada Shukla Panchami, according to tradition.

In some places, people celebrate this festival in Krishna Paksha, and the timing varies from region to region. The festival reveres its eight snakes as its deities.

Today, people worship them. Anant, Vasuki, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshak, Kuleer, Karkata, and Shankha are their names.

On Chaturthi, have one meal, and then on Panchami, observe a fast. After Panchami, you can have dinner once the fast ends.

Set the snake image or the earthen idol on the wooden stool for Puja. Present rice, flowers, vermilion, turmeric, and them to Nag Devta.

Next, offer the concoction of raw milk, ghee, and sugar to the Nag Devta, who is seated on the stool. After the Puja Ritual is complete, conduct the Snake God Aarti.

You can also provide a snake charmer with donations and make an offering of milk to the snake. Worshippers should listen and recite the Nag Panchami katha at the end.

Nag Panchami Celebrations And Rituals

It is said that worshipping the snakes of Chamatkar Pur grants all wishes. On this day, we liberally use milk in the delicacies made at home.

Particularly important are these celebrations in Gujarat and Ujjain, two regions of India.

During Naga Panchami, tens of thousands of worshippers swarm the Mahakaleshwar Mandir in Ujjain.

Description: Guru Purnima 2025

The sacred festival Guru Purnima 2025 is conducted on the full moon day, which falls in the month of Ashada (July-August).

The guru means the teacher is worshipped by their students on this day. In our lives, a guru brings light from the darkness to enlighten us with knowledge.

Guru Purnima is a festival of emotions and faith throughout the entire nation. It is a day to honor the Guru (the person from whom we learn) of our life. The name itself conveys the precise meaning of the custom.

It is a day set aside to honor all the academic and spiritual Gurus who have blessed us with their knowledge and guidance. Guru Purnima is also known as Vyasa Purnima.

The Sanskrit words “Gu” and “Ru,” which in English translate as “Darkness or Ignorance” and “Remover of that darkness,” respectively, are the roots of the word “Guru.” Guru is a term used to refer to someone who dispels our ignorance.

In Hinduism, the Guru is compared to God. As a result, Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains celebrate it as a holiday or special occasion throughout India, Nepal, and Bhutan.

Ved Vyasa, one of the most revered Gurus in historic India, is worshipped on Guru Purnima by Hindus.

Buddhists celebrate it in remembrance of Buddha, who delivered his first sermon on this day.

Guru is seen as being more important than God in Hinduism since it is the Guru who guides you to God.

In a famous Doha, Kabir states, “गुरु गोविंद दोउ खड़े, काके लागूं पाँय बलिहारी गुरु आपने, गोविंद दियो मिलाय” This is translated as, Whose feet will you touch?

Importance Of Guru Purnima

Several tales mark Guru Purnima. In Hindu mythology, Guru Purnima is the full moon day on which Shiva, the first yogi, changed into the Adi Guru, the first guru, and started imparting wisdom to the Saptrishis, who had performed Sadhna for 84 years to learn from Shiva.

Only seven individuals remained after a large number of people traveled to the Himalayas to view Shiva’s unusual look, but they knew nothing about him beforehand.

They implored Shiva to educate them and to make them feel and experience what he felt.

Guru Purnima 2025

At first, Shiva hesitated, but he eventually gave in and told them to do sadhana, at which point he closed his eyes. It was the day of the full moon after 84 years of Sadhana.

The disciples became known as Saptrishis after 84 years of sadhana, on the day of the full moon (Purnima), when Shiva took over as their teacher and became their guru.

The Saptrishis then rose to fame and learned things that they later shared with the rest of the world.

Regarding Gautam Buddha, it is believed that he attained enlightenment on this day, known as the full moon day (Purnima), and that he delivered his first sermon at Sarnath on that day. Buddha Purnima is sometimes referred to as it.

According to Jains, on this day in the Asadha month, Indrabhuti Gautam became Indrabhuti Swami’s first disciple and the 24th Tirthankar of the Jain religion. Following that, this day became known as Treenok Guha Purnima.

History Of Guru Purnima

According to tradition, Maharshi Veda Vyasa, an outstanding figure from antiquity and the creator of amazing works, including the Brahma Sutra, the Mahabharata, the Shrimad Bhagvat, and 18 Puranas, was born on the Ashadha Purnima.

Rishi Parashara was the father of Ved Vyas. According to Hindu Shastras, Veda Vyas was knowledgeable of all Kaals (times—past, present, and future).

He saw with his divine eye that people would grow disinterested in religion in the future.

As a result, people will become less religious, avoid accepting responsibility, and live shorter lives.

He divided the Vedas into four sections and gave each one a different name: Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda.

As a result, he gained notoriety under the moniker Veda Vyasa. Similarly, he taught his pupils Vaishampayana, Sumantumuni, Pail, and Jaimin the teachings of these four Vedas.

Because of how enigmatic and challenging this knowledge was, he produced the Puranas, which is the fifth Veda.

He regarded these Puranas as containing interesting tales of Vedic wisdom. He taught Roma Harshan, one of his disciples, the knowledge of the Purana.
