Mythological Stories Behind Sita Navami

The mythological tale behind Sita Navami is very closely associated with the epic Ramayana and tells the divine origin of Mata Sita.

According to legend, Mata Sita was not born naturally like every other child but was found by King Janaka of Mithila.

The story starts with critical events in the kingdom of Mithila. As per mythology, there had not been a single drop of rain in the land of Mithila for several years, and the whole kingdom was facing drought and famine.

Sita Navami 2025

The land has dried up, crops have faded, and the people of Mithila are losing all their hopes.

Noticing the suffering of his people, King Janaka was disheartened, upset, and very helpless at that time.

Seeing the declining condition of Mithila, the sages told King Janak to plow the field by himself using a golden plow so that the kingdom could get the blessing of god Indradev.

After this, King Janak started plowing the field, and suddenly, his plow struck a box. The moment he opened the box, there was a miracle. A baby girl burst forth from the earth and bathed in divine light.

At that time, King Janak did not have any children, so he adopted that girl and named her Sita.

As the daughter of King Janak, she was also addressed as Janaki Ji. Aside from this, she is also addressed by various other names, like Bhumija and Maithili.

She was referred to as Bhumijia because she came out of the earth. It is also stated that as soon as Mata Sita reached Mithala, the rains began in abundance, and droughts vanished.

Her life is full of different tests, like her abduction by Ravana and her rescue by Lord Rama. This shows how fearless and unshakeable her faith in dharma.

In the process, he wounded several Kshatriya kings and continued killing them for 21 births.

Parshuram kept killing the Kshatriyas until Sage Ruchika came and stopped him from doing so.

Later, he pleased Lord Shiva with his penance and devotion, and Lord Shiva blessed him with a divine bow to protect the world from evil forces.

Legend also goes that once, Parshuram was going to visit Lord Shiva, but Lord Ganesha tried to stop him.

He fought with Lord Ganesha and broke one of his teeth. Since then, Lord Ganesha has come to be known as Ekadanta.

Lord Parshuram has also appeared in epic tales like the Ramayana and Mahabharata. He met Lord Vishnu’s two incarnations, Lord Rama and Lord Krishna.

Why did Lord Parshuram kill his Mother?

According to mythology, once, Mother Renuka went to take a bath. When she returned after taking a bath, she saw King Chitrarath taking a bath.

Seeing his beauty, the mother’s mind got disturbed. When she reached home and saw her, Maharishi Jamdagni understood what had happened. He told his sons to kill their mother, but everyone refused to do so.

In such a situation, Jamdagni got angry and cursed his four sons to lose their power of thinking.

When Parshuram reached there, Maharishi Jamdagni asked him to kill his mother. He obeyed his father’s orders and killed his mother.

Maharishi Jamdagni was very happy and asked Parshuram to ask for three boons. Then he asked for the first boon to bring his mother back to life, the second to set his brothers right, and the third boon that he should never be defeated and get a long life.

Why does Lord Parshuram have Kshatriya Qualities?

Lord Parshuram was born into a Brahmin family, but his nature makes him of the Kshatriya clan.

He is considered to have a very short temper, and due to this anger, he broke one tooth of Lord Ganesha.

According to the scriptures, Maharishi Bhrigu’s son Richik was married to King Gadhi’s daughter Satyavati.

After marriage, Satyavati wished Maharishi Bhrigu a son for herself and her mother. In such a situation, Maharishi Bhrigu gave them two fruits and said that she should embrace the fig tree and her mother should embrace the peepal tree and eat them.

But Satyavati and her mother did not follow this rule of Maharishi Bhrigu at all, so Maharishi Bhrigu got very angry, and he told Satyavati that you have embraced the wrong tree.

Therefore, your son will be born with Kshatriya qualities despite being a Brahmin, and your mother’s son will be born with Brahmin qualities despite being a Kshatriya.

In such a situation, Satyavati and her mother accepted their mistake. They prayed to Maharishi Bhrigu that my son should not have Kshatriya qualities, even if my grandson was born with such qualities.

Maharishi Bhrigu accepted his words, and after some time, Jamdagni Muni was born from Satyavati’s womb, from whom Parshuram Ji was born.

The celebration is linked with the spring season, a time of starting new things, both spiritual and in nature.

Chaitra Navratri 2025

Chaitra Navratri is a festival of 9 days devoted to Goddess Durga and her nine multiple forms every day. Every day is commemorated with unique customs, devotion, and colours.

It’s a time of spiritual beginnings, fasting, and vibrant observation around numerous parts of India.

People believed that worshipping Goddess Durga’s nine forms represented many aspects of divine feminine strengths. The nine forms are Shaila Putri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri.

It is the right time to start a new venture, especially in northern or Western India. People think it’s an ideal time to make investments, personal growth, and start new businesses.

Multiple people begin their businesses or homes during such a period, which is thought to be an auspicious time.

Stories and Legends Behind the Navratri Festival

The story associated with the Navratri celebration is about Goddess Durga killing the demon Mahishasura. The legend known for the Navratri celebration tells of the great war between Mahishasura and Goddess Durga.

The demon received a boon from Lord Brahma with immortality under one condition: he would be defeated only by a woman. Blessed with immortality and confidence, demons attacked the trilok -earth, heaven, and hell.

As only a woman can kill him, even the Gods did not take a chance against him. The feared gods prayed to lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva to seek help to defeat the Mahishasura.

How Was Goddess Durga Incarnated?

Seeing the helpless gods, Lord Vishnu decided to incarnate a woman, including all of God’s and Goddesses’ power to defeat the demon. As per the Lord Brahma’s boon, only a woman can kill him. Now, Lord Shiva (god of destruction), gods came to Lord Shiva to seek help.

Later, lord Shiva and Brahma merged all their powers in the form of a woman lord Vishnu incarnated to kill Mahishasura. It is considered that Goddess Durga is the rebirth of Goddess Parvati (consent of Lord Shiva).

The three powerful gods -Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh created the Goddess Durga; she fought with the demon Mahishura for 15 long days. The war surprised Trilok.

During the war, the demon kept changing his form to mislead the Devi Durga. Basically, when the demon took the form of a buffalo, Goddess Durga immediately attacked his chest with her weapon, ‘Trishul,’ to kill him.

How does the Navratri celebration start?

Hence, to celebrate the victory of the Goddess over demon power, the Navratri festival started to be observed around the world. Every day, nine forms of Devi are worshipped in different parts of India.

The first day is dedicated to Goddess Shailputri; the second is to Goddess Brahmacharini; the third day to Goddess Chandraghanta; the fourth day is to Goddess Kushmanda; fifth day to Goddess Skandamata; sixth day Goddess Katyayni; seventh day is Goddess Kaalratri; the eighth day Goddess Mahagauri and on the last day people pay homage to Goddess Siddhidatri.
